Powering Down Responsibly: A Comprehensive Guide to Safe AGM & GEL Battery Recycling and Disposal

Every battery has a service life, and while it may not be completely dead at the end, it still shouldn’t end up in the trash. Recycling your AGM or GEL battery properly is not only good to the environment, but also keeps valuable materials in the loop and out of landfills.

At Fullriver, we make batteries that are long-lasting. However, when the time to shut down permanently comes, we want to make certain that you are aware of how to do it correctly.

The Importance of Battery Recycling

Both AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) and GEL batteries are sealed lead-acid batteries. Although they are safer and more environmentally friendly than the older flooded battery types, they do contain lead, acid and other materials that must be properly handled when they reach the end of their life.

Properly recycled, an AGM or GEL battery can have over 95% of its material re-used. That includes:

  • Lead – 100% recycled into new batteries or industrial products
  • Plastic case – Washed, shredded and re-used in the production process
  • Electrolyte – Neutralized or re-used, depending on the plant

This recycling loop prevents the deposit of harmful substances in our landfills, and new raw materials are minimized.

Indications That It Is Time to Recycle

Although Fullriver batteries are designed to provide extended service life, nothing can last forever. The following are some indications that yours is approaching it’s time to retire:

• Poor charge retention ability

• Observable decrease in run time

• Deformation or swelling

• Pitting or leakage at the terminals

• Over 4–7 years of active service, depending on use

Recycling Your Battery Safely

Do not discard it in the dust bin. Batteries are classified as hazardous waste and should be handled with special care. Without proper disposal, they may cause harm to the environment and in some states, it may attract a fine.

Find a qualified battery recycling center. AGM and GEL batteries are accepted at many auto parts stores, recycling centers, and hazardous waste drop-off sites. Or you can refer to your local waste management authority or call2recycle.org to find drop-off locations.

Manipulate. Although AGM and GEL batteries are maintenance-free and non-spillable, it is always better to wear gloves when dealing with used batteries. Keep them in an upright position in a strong box or container and keep them out of heat and moisture.

Inquire about a core return program. Certain retailers will give you a refund or a discount on a new battery if you bring in your old one when you purchase a new one – an easy form of recycling and saving too.

What Of Shipping or Transporting?

  • In case you must carry a used battery to be recycled, then you ought to observe the following tips:
  • • Terminals should be kept covered or taped to avoid short circuits

• Store batteries in an upright position that is safe

• Do not carry damaged, leaking or cracked batteries without expert advice

When you are shipping more than one battery or are in a business environment, then you need to be aware of DOT regulations and properly label and use containers.

A More Environmentally Friendly End Is a Smarter Start

AGM and GEL batteries can silently work to provide power to your systems in the background, but when their service life comes to an end, the way you dispose of them counts. Responsible recycling helps put valuable materials back into use, safeguard the environment and help ensure a brighter energy future.

Here at Fullriver, we are dedicated to making you power smarter, first charge to last cycle.
